MBA Job Market –

The job market for MBAs is improving but it still has not returned to pre-recession levels.  Career centers are reporting higher starting salaries for the class of 2010 and a slightly higher placement rate than in 2009.  However, these numbers are still significantly lower than earlier years.   Recently, the Wall Street Journal interviewed MBA career service directors regarding the current job market.

Job Search –

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal  provides advice to job seekers on finding unadvertised positions.  According to the founder of CollegeRecruiter.com, over 80% of job openings are not listed.  The article mentions that research and networking skills are the best assets for a job seeker in this environment.  Some research methods include tracking journals, restructuring announcements, and analysts reports.

Treasury Direct Kids –

Treasury Direct Kids is a great site that teaches financial literacy and the basics of government finances.  The site provides financial literacy lessons, money and math games, as well as informational links.  Kids can visit the site and learn all about bonds, the history of U.S. Debt, and the value of saving.  Treasury Direct Kids is a product of the U.S. Department of the Treasury Bureau of the Public Debt.

Management Innovation Competition –

The management innovation contest is a joint effort of the Management Innovation Exchange and HCL Technologies.  Participants must be current Masters or Doctoral business students.  The deadine for submissions is February 28th and the finalists will be announced by April 15th.

Higher Education Information –

A recent report by a Harvard University professor concluded that the federal government should be actively involved in the process of gathering and distributing information related to higher education.  The report details the amount of involvement and makes sound suggestions on how to correct the current situation.  US News has commentary on the report that is also sound and logical.

Bloomberg Businessweek MBA Rankings –

Bloomberg Businessweek has released more information regarding their MBA rankings.  The interactive tables published on Novemebr 11th include an index number for each program.  The index number can help readers determine the actual distance between two ranked programs.  For example, the difference between number ten Sloan (81.3) and number 11 Darden (81) is very slight.

MBA Job Placement –

MBA placement rates are starting to rebound after a couple of poor recruiting cycles.   Top schools are reporting a slight increase in salaries and a higher percentage of recent graduates employed within 3 months of graduation.  The recent uptick in hiring is still below 2006 levels and lacks the pre-recession signing bonuses.

The Office of Domestic Finance is a great resource for information on financial education.  The site provides links and descriptions of financial education resources that range from curricula and programs to other resource centers.  The Office of Comptroller of the Currency and the Office of Thrift Supervision are only two examples of resource centers that can be found of the site.  One great site that was listed for kids to learn financial literacy is the H.I.P. Pocket Change provided by the U.S. Mint.
