Six Figure Graduate Degree Jobs -

Graduate degrees in some fields can lead to high income careers.  A few of the highest earning degrees are in law, business, and medicine.  US News reports on graduate degrees that can yield jobs paying $100,000 and more per year.  Some of the careers are management consulting, financial management, and dentistry.

Harvard Medical School Tops US News Rankings -

Harvard Medical School finished number one for research programs in the US News rankings for 2011.  The University of Pennsylvania finished second, Johns Hopkins was ranked third, and Washington University in St. Louis came in fourth.  Stanford moved from 11th place to 5th on the list and had an acceptance rate of only 3.3%.  Acceptance rates at top research programs tend to be lower than at other graduate programs.

US News 2011 Law School Rankings -

The US News 2011 law schools rankings were released and little has changed in the top 14.  The top five schools are still Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, and the University of Chicago.  The only new addition to the top 14 is the University of Texas at Austin which tied for the 14th rank.  One of the biggest shifts in ranking came for the University of Maryland which improved from 48th to 42nd place.

Law Firms Rank Law Schools -

The US News has added another ranking for law schools.  Hiring partners at top law firms were asked to rank law schools based on academic quality.  Schools were ranked on a five point scale from outstanding (5) to marginal (1).  Harvard was ranked number one with Yale and Stanford finishing tied for second.

CEO Schools -

A recent US News article looked at where Fortune 500 CEO’s received their education.  The top 3 schools were Harvard, Columbia, and the University of Pennsyvania.  The number of CEO’s from each school are 58, 21, and 20.  The 58 Harvard CEO’s include 33 that received an MBA.

Alumni Donation Rates -

 Alumni donation rates are an indication of school satisfaction and the strength of an alumni network.  US News has an article that lists the top 10 schools for alumni giving and includes their US News ranking.  Most of the schools are ranked in the top 10 of their respective categories.

Higher Education Information -

A recent report by a Harvard University professor concluded that the federal government should be actively involved in the process of gathering and distributing information related to higher education.  The report details the amount of involvement and makes sound suggestions on how to correct the current situation.  US News has commentary on the report that is also sound and logical.

Great College Towns -

US News has an article and slideshow on 10 great college towns.  They range in size from big cities like Austin and Boston to smaller towns like Berkeley and Amherst.  Also on the list were Ann Arbor, Chapel Hill, and Anthens Georgia.

Online Degrees -

Online programs have seen a spike in enrollment numbers and attention from prospective students.  US News has an article regarding the recent attention that online programs are facing  from regulators.  The article is well written and provides a quick look at online programs for prospective students.

US News: National Liberal Arts Rankings -

The US News best colleges 2011 rankings were discussed in a previous post regarding national universities.  The national liberal arts college rankings were also released by the US News.  Three of the top five colleges are located in the state of Massachusetts.  Williams college was rankied number one and Amherst came in second place.  Wellesly college was tied for fourth place in the rankings.  Swarthmore finished in third place and Middlebury college was also tied for fourth.  Harvey Mudd, known for top starting salries, was tied for 18th place.

US News Rankings: National Universities -

The US News has released the much anticipated best colleges 2011 rankings.  Harvard has recaptured the number one ranking and Princeton has fallen into second place.  Yale still finished a very strong third with a score five points higher than number fourth ranked Columbia.  Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania were tied for fifth place.  The University of Pennsylvania had the highest acceptance rate of the top six schools at 18% of applicants.

Entrepreneurial Programs -

 US News has an article on new entrepreneurial programs at business schools.  Interest in courses relating to entrepreneurship has risen significantly in recent years.  Babson has been ranked as the top entrepreneurship program for the last 17 years.  Some other highly ranked programs are Stanford, MIT, Harvard and Wharton.

GMAT Changes -

The Graduate Management Admission Council announced that there will be changes to the GMAT in June 2012.  The new test will take the same amount of time to complete but one of the writing sections will be replaced with an intergrated reasoning section.  The integrated reasoning section questions will be similar to the data sufficiency questions that already appear on the GMAT.

Checking Out Schools -

When you want to check out a prospective school there are a number of ways to do research.  Some of the best ways are to speak to the students and check out their facilities.  A visit to the dining hall and the student union was a top 5 suggestion in a recent US News article.  The article also suggested taking a tour of the community and sitting in on a class.  It might not be a bad idea to pay the gym a visit and talk to some students in that type of setting.  Spending a little time in the library on your visit would also be a good idea for a prospective student.  The gym and the library are two places on campus that students are likely to end up spending a great deal of time.
