Career Builder Salary Center -

Career Builder offers a salary center that provides a job search engine, calculators, and career advice.  The CB Salary Center has three free calculators that can assist in a career search.  The first calculator displays jobs after a salary range and location are entered.  The second calculator provides positions after entering a job title and location.  A cost of living comparison is the third calculator provided by the CB Salary Center. It calculates the income needed in different cities for the same standard of living.

The US News has an education site that covers college and graduate programs.  US News has rankings for most programs and provides data for applicants.  In addition, US News has articles on colleges, education, and employment.

US News National University Rankings -

Harvard and Princeton University tied for first place in the US News rankings for National Universities.  National Universities offer a wide range of degrees and invest heavily in research.  Yale University finished third and there were five universities tied for fifth place.  The five universities tied for fifth are the California Institute for Technology, MIT, Stanford University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Pennsylvania.  Duke completed the top ten ranked National Universities.

Top Graduate Degrees

Yahoo! Education has an article on 5 top master’s degrees that can help build a career.  The 5 degees listed are an MBA, information technology, human resources management, computer science, and economics.  All five master degrees have mid-career salaries around $100,000 per year and projected job growth of 17% or higher.

Stanford NYC -

Stanford University is one of at least 27 schools  that are considering the creation of a top New York City based engineering school.  The Economic Development Corporation may contribute land and up to $100 million for the creation of the school.  Mike Bloomberg has indicated that the project could generate $6 billion in economic activity and create 22,000 jobs.

MIT OpenCourseWare -

MIT OpenCourseWare offers free lecture notes and exams for courses in almost every subject.  No registration is required for the site and each course is easy to download.  The most visited courses are in computer science, mathematics, and engineering.  The Sloan School of Management offers courses in Real Estate Finance, Entrepeneurship, and Investments.

A recent article on Yahoo! Education discusses switching careers and returning to school.  The article states that summer classes are a good option for returning students.  In addition, top degrees are listed for healthcare, business, and technology programs.

Private Sector Job Market Helps New Grads -

According to a recent survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers are planning to hire 19% more recent graduates this year than in 2010.  The survey also indicated that 41% of college seniors that were seeking positions had job offers.  Most of the hiring is in the private sector with limited availability of public sector positions.

Undergraduate Engineering Salaries -

According to a Georgetown University study, undergraduates that major in engineering have the highest median incomes.  Georgetown’s Center on Education and the Workforce ranked the median salaries by undergraduate major and eight of the top ten were in engineering.  The study incorporated data for 171 undergraduate majors that included over one half of a million respondents.

US News Engineering School Rankings 2011 -

US News has released their engineering school rankings for 2011.  The rankings include full-time tuition costs, total enrollment, and quantitative GRE scores.  Massachusetts Institute of Technolgy (MIT) was first and Stanford University finished second in the rankings.
